HAIR LOSS CANNOT BE CAUSED BY SHAMPOO (ANY BRAND)

Hair loss is a symptom of something going on internally. No shampoo, regardless of the brand, can cause hair loss. Hair loss is a symptom of an internal (biological) issue (Chin-Hsien et al. 2015; USTI 2023).

In fact, there are countless shampoos that help create a healthy scalp environment to promote hair growth and thickness. Dr. Antonella Tosti, M.D. answered one very important question: What are the main causes of hair loss? (video): “I don’t believe shampoos can generally cause hair loss and it’s also very important for our patient to understand that the hair loss occurs three months after a triggering event. So if you experience hair loss a few days after using a shampoo that is definitely not the cause.”

Hundreds of shampoo brands have been sued for causing hair loss, but that doesn't mean that the products actually do cause hair loss...

Hair loss can occur from numerous internal drivers such as changes in stress, hormones including dihydrotestosterone (DHT), diet, rapid weight loss, and more. Scalp conditions such as dandruff and psoriasis can also thin your hair.

The good news is, there are shampoos formulated to deal with all these issues. For dandruff, shampoos with anti-fungal components can work. Psoriasis-linked hair loss can be addressed with a shampoo containing a topical steroid. There are also DHT-blocking shampoos. Unfortunately, we live in a country where you can sue anyone for anything! But fortunately for us, MONAT has won every single lawsuit against them (last one was in the beginning of 2018 and there hasn’t been one since). This brings us to the question: Are Monat’s products safe? According to Allergisa — an international third-party testing facility that ran allergy tests on the brand’s products — the answer is yes. In 2018, the company provided a 48-hour patch test on human volunteers using Monat products and found no evidence that they caused irritation or adverse reactions on the skin. After a six-week period of tests, the products were deemed safe by Allergisa.

  All but three ingredients score a “1” out of 10 (the lowest hazard rating on a 10-point scale) in the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Ingredient Database: Polysorbate 60, Sodium Benzoate, and Steareth-21 received a score of "3" due concerns about potential contamination during manufacturing, not because of anything that is unsafe with them directly.

Monat doesn't use the drug Minoxidil, like the other regrowth lines do (think Rogaine, Keeps, Hims, Shapiro MD, Nioxin, etc.). Minoxidil has many common side effects such as burning, acne, hair loss, inflammation, redness, and swelling, and when people stop using it hair fall can happen. Monat only uses safe, effective, proven plant based ingredients to regrow and stop loss - capixyl is the most prominent ingredient.

Capixyl consists of: Butylene Glycol,  Water,  Dextran, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3,  Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract.  Red Clover contains BiochaninA, an isoflavone.

Research has demonstrated that Biochanin A modulates chronic inflammation and that red clover’s isoflavones may also function as important antioxidants, limiting free radical damage to the skin and scalp. Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3 works as an extracellular matrix (ECM) stimulator, increasing anchoring of the bulb in the follicle. The remodeling signal will increase the size of hair follicle for increased strand count and vitality.

Capixyl efficacy is based on the combined action of its two ingredients, allowing direction action on DHT (dihydrotestosterone) preventing the hair cycle to shorten and hair follicle miniaturization, improving the ECM proteins in dermal papilla surrounding hair papilla for better anchoring and promoting an increase of follicle size. Capixyl reduces inflammation which is a contributing factor in hair loss.

When people are losing hair, there are a few things that are typically going on. DHT is causing inflammation in the scalp, which shortens the growth period of the hair strand, and also makes the hair smaller in diameter. This inflammation also skewes the ratio of growing vs resting hair. Normal/healthy scalps have more hair in growth (anagen) than in resting (catagen and or telogen). Telogen is the phase that hair fall occurs.

Capixyl reduces the inflammation that DHT causes and restores the ratio to the normal, more hair in growth phase than resting. The reduction in inflammation can make the miniaturized hair loose in the follicle. As the ratio is returned to normal, and more hairs are back in growth, the existing hairs are much more prone to release and fall out. The new growth activity will also push out the resting hair to make room for the new strand that is growing in. Capixyl has been shown to work very quickly on inflammation and DHT levels. This is why people can see a marked uptick in hair fall/shedding after a very short time on the product. The more sever the scalp issues/product buildup, the more severe the initial hair fall, and it follows that the cycle may take longer to turn around. The good news is, no one has bald when using Monat. Of course, nutrition, and other metabolic factors come into play here as well.

HOW DOES CAPIXYL HELP STOP HAIR LOSS & REGROW LOST HAIR?

Hair loss & thinning is a big deal. This single issue had become the biggest concern my clients had. Studies show that over 50% of men and maybe as many women over 40 are suffering with Androgenic Alopecia. By age 35 as many as 2/3 of men will have some level of thinning & loss. Androgenic Alopecia (pattern baldness) is by far the biggest category of hair loss.

This type of hair loss happens when follicles are miniaturized by DHT. DHT increases inflammation & restricts the bodies ability to grow hair through inflammation & loss of connective tissue around the follicle, making it thinner, finer, & shortening the growth cycle until the hair is gone & growth is stopped. It has been found that in spite of their normal testosterone levels people suffering from alopecia have higher levels of 5α-reductase, DHT and androgen receptors. In men, the 5α-reductase activity is higher in the balding area.

Capixyl has been turning heads & regrowing hair since 2011 when it was introduced.  Lucas Meyer cosmetics makes Capixyl. Hair care manufacturers, like Monat, buy it to put into their formulations. Capixyl has yet to come to prominence in the hair care world, but it is getting noticed big time. Cost is probably the biggest reason, but you get what you pay for, right?

Capixyl gives you your normal hair follicle back. It does this by working to reduce the amount of the enzyme 5 alpha reductase, the enzyme the modulates testosterone into DHT. Since people experiencing hair loss often have higher than normal levels of DHT in the areas that are thinning or bald, this reduction affects those areas most.

Once Capixyl has started to work, inflammation is reduced, cellular turn over is increase, the dermal papilla gets bigger around, & stronger more vibrant hair grows. The growth cycle is reset & the hair returns to its pre thinning state.

I know this doesn't list the ingredients. It does however state how Monat determines what will and will not be used in the product line.

STYLISTS ARE NOT TRICHOLOGISTS OR DERMATOLOGISTS

FIRST - 50% of men and 30% of women suffer from genetic hair loss. Ironically, when it starts happening, 80% of sufferers ask their hair stylist for help first (USTI 2023). A hair stylist’s job is to cut, color, and style; they are not trichologists or dermatologists, they have not studied the scalp/hair loss extensively nor are they trained in product knowledge to know how to treat or recommend hair loss solutions, so while this seems like the natural solution, listening to your stylist about hair products and especially hair loss solutions is not a wise choice unless they have additional training.

THE MAIN REASONS STYLISTS SAY XYZ

Some stylists talk negatively about Monat and it truly stems from lack of education and being protective of their product sales, similar to the same reasons medical doctors don’t usually back natural cures - indoctrination. All the lawsuits about hair loss have been dismissed for lack of supporting information, and some people were even sued back for defamation. A lot of these people who took a case to court were stylists.

Their negative comments tend to stem from two things:

1 - they’re uneducated about Monat’s quality/results and like to hide behind “lawsuits” and “mlm” vocab (which you now know the truth about)

2 - they don’t like that their clients are buying shampoo from someone else. Essentially, they get upset that we take business from them, know that their salon clients will keep buying Monat because its really good. When you work in a salon it’s your job to sell products and make commissions or else you can be fired // paychecks are low.

BUT there are HUNDREDS (if not thousands at this point) of Monat salon owners in the US alone! Monat is officially the fastest growing haircare company in the US and truly gives you healthy hair and scalp: which means for non-Monat stylists that A) no commission for them when trying to sell you their products they HAVE to sell and B) less salon visits because your Monat hair will lock in color 3x longer, damage is minimized, etc. Monat products are incredible because they are the first hair care line to penetrate the hair cortex and repair the hair from the inside out. And of course Monat patented their formulas and ingredients, so when their customers started coming in less and rejecting their products the stylists were trying to sell them, stylist resulted to slandering Monat.

Perspective from a hairstylist Tobe Maven - “But they aren’t qualified to sell haircare” Heard this before? I am a retired Hairstylist for 10 years and I’m gonna lay out some truths that some stylists don’t want you to know. Ready!? Neither are they! Here’s the thing. When you go to beauty school you learn how to cut it, bleach it, how to mix color, and you learn what shampoo and conditioner CAN do. Now we aren’t taught about haircare lines, such as Aveda or Redken. Guess who teaches us about those lines? THEIR COMPANIES!! Their companies put us in their own classes for continuing education!

YOU DO NOT LEARN PRODUCT LINES IN HAIR SCHOOL! period! And if you happen to come across the conversation it’s because of one of three things:

• Your teacher loves the product.

• You went to a specific school that carries their own line (Paul Mitchell)

• They HIRED an instructor from their particular company! Teaching YOU about their product!

  So let me tell you what OUR company teaches us. When you have asked us about our products, not only have we been taught to Help you and recommend the best products we offer specifically for you, but we are continually educated on our products. Just as if you were to learn from another company.

Little secret you may not know. But those reps for other companies, 99.9% of them aren’t hairstylists and never went to beauty school! You think that pharmaceutical rep is a doctor? Same idea! So when someone says they aren’t qualified, remember this. Because Monat Market Partners are more qualified than most!

Many people make the accusation of “pyramid scheme” without knowing what it actually means. So, here’s the definition: a form of investment (illegal in the US and elsewhere) in which each paying participant recruits two further participants, with returns being given to early participants using money contributed by later ones.

FIRST - pyramid schemes are illegal. They require no products to be sold and heavily rely on recruitment. Monat is a legit, billion dollar direct sales company with a 1:10 ratio of Market Partners (me) to VIP clients (you), meaning Monat heavily relies on product sales rather than recruitment.

FACT: Decades ago, some multi-level marketing (MLM) companies were legitimate pyramid schemes. Unfortunately, this stigma is still floating around the MLM/direct sales industry due to ignorance and lack of education.

SECOND - MLM/direct sales companies are becoming more and more popular as our consumerism habits shift towards online sales, affiliate marketing, post-pandemic work from home desires, and the ability for an uncapped income. It’s definitely not your mom’s mlm industry anymore!

No one shakes their head at Costco and goes "I'd NEVER buy my toilet paper there! Have you SEEN their prices? Who would spend that??"

So. When discussing cost, let's be sure we're comparing apples to apples.

Monat products are CONCENTRATED with 60% product vs 40% or less in competitors. I know I spent $25-35+ per bottle when I used salon brands! Most of those are 80% water. Same price. Went through it faster. Product was not comparable to Monat.

I am saving money AND using a better, safer product. At the end of the day...you are saving money with Monat and getting a product that actually solves the problem you have with your hair. I am actually saving you money! You need shampoo anyway why not support small, save money, and get a clean product that works.

I’m sorry you didn’t have a great experience in the past, but if you purchased the correct products, learned how to use them properly, AND gave them enough time, you would have seen amazing results!

Some reasons you may think “they didn’t work for me”:

• maybe your old Market Partner was uneducated and gave you the wrong products. Monat has a dozen shampoos and hundreds of haircare products that are problem specific. If your not using the correct product for your unique hair type (not your mom, not your bestie, YOURS) you may not have the best experience.

  • maybe you weren’t taught how to properly use your products.

  • maybe you didn’t give your customized regimen enough time to see results (three months MINIMUM)

  • maybe you only used the first half of your custom products (not your second half in your Flexship) because of price so you didn’t end up seeing full results

  • maybe your seasonality/weather drastically changed (or you moved locations) after purchasing your products and your hair/scalp changed and you should have been using different bottles

  • maybe you didn’t do weekly deep scalp treatments

  • maybe you mixed other product brands into your regimen

  • maybe you didn’t use your masque every other week

  • maybe you didn’t rinse out your products well enough

  • maybe you bought your own bottles off a Market Partners website thinking you knew what your hair/scalp needed, without getting them customized to you by a Monat expert

  • bottles sold anywhere and not from a certified Market Partner are unregulated, unsafe, and should not be purchased (Amazon, online “Target” or “Walmart” website, etc.)

  • AND THE BIGGY - you obviously haven’t found a better solution since, because you’re coming to me for hair help!

I honestly don’t care if you’ve tried Monat products before with another Market Partner and it didn’t work out. Not to sound harsh, but being fully transparent - that means nothing to me because you and I are starting from ground zero together; with where your hair and scalp currently are, your current hair issues, new hair goals, and I am in control of your transformation (not someone else I don’t even know).

I have had countless clients enroll with me who have previously tried Monat with another Market Partner and didn’t like their experience. Many of those clients have been with me for years!

I like to play around with the products to really be good at product recommendations. The scalp oil is a non negotiable. I use the light version since I have super fine hair.

Shampoo favorites for my hair type: The volume shampoo or the apple cider vinegar shampoo.

Conditioner Favorite: Intense repair conditioner.

For scalp health: ACV Rinse + Scalp Scrub (about once a month)

Ends: Hydrating Hair Masque (about once every two weeks) + the detangler on wash days.

I am obsessed with dry shampoo for dirty hair to extend washes and clean hair for volume. When I curl my hair I use dry texture spray, taffy, and hairspray. I am a newly obsessed skincare snob. I use the be balanced line and every other skincare product we have DAILY! I also use our greens, collagen, and probiotics religiously!
